We arrived in B.A. after a long flight from Quito. After some scrambling -- with the help of a very patient cab driver -- we took two beds at the Home Sweet Home hostel in the San Telmo section of B.A. At first we thought Home Sweet Home -- run by a few 20-year old boys and inhabited by MTV-watching, night-owl university students who spoke only Spanish -- might not be the right place for us. But we soon realized that it lived up to its name. While we were getting ready for bed (and everyone else was getting ready to go out) the boys came to us very concerned about something to do with our room. After a lot of translation work we realized they were worried that they needed to put a guy in our dorm room. We assured them that it was no problema! That´s when we knew that we could sleep well because the boys were looking out of us.
Other notable experiences on that first night -- navigating the local locutoria (phone and internet shop) and successfully booking a hotel for the next night, purchasing water through the metal bars of a late-night convenience store does, and learning that we do not like the milanesa (tough fried beef). And, importantly, when the boys served us breakfast the next morning (!) Heather discovered a new found love for Nutella . . . soon to be trumped by her appreciation of the beauty of Argentinian men.
